Once A Mountaineer, Always A Mountaineer Brings Smiles To Kids Faces

The Non-Profit Organization Get Moving! Inc. held its annual Mini Day of Play at the Shack Neighborhood House on Monday.  Around 50 kids, members of the WVU Football Team, the Mountaineer mascot and WVU Cheerleaders were all in attendance for the event.

The Organization was put together 5 years ago by West Virginia professor Dr. Elizabeth Oppe. The goal of the organization is to promote healthy lifestyles for the youth in the Mountain State by eating healthy and being physically active. During the event, the kids participated in five stations ran by members of the WVU Football Team.   The 90-minute event left the kids, players and all involved with smiles and a lasting memory of a great day.

Troy Clemons, WVU Mountaineer mascot, said he enjoyed the event as it gave the kids a chance to have a lot of fun while interacting with members of the WVU Football team.  Not everyone in town gets to come to the games so the kids get a chance to put a face to the name while running off some energy.  Clemons also said traveling the state of West Virginia has given him a passion to be more involved in organizations and opportunities to give back.

Members of the WVU Football team also expressed their support and how much they enjoyed being a part of the event.  Matt Jones said he liked the event and what the organization was doing for the kids in the area.  He stated too many kids are spending their times on cell phones or video games instead of being active and playing sports.  David Long, who also participated in the event last year, said this is a fun event.  Long, who is from a big family, said he loves kids and enjoys working and having fun with them.

The event ended with all participants locked arm-in-arm singing Country Roads.  If you would like to gain more information about the organization or the Day of Play event scheduled in March check out their website, www.umountaineers.com and the organization’s social media pages.  Let’s get active and #GETMOVING.
