Former WVU guard and assistant coach Jordan McCabe has been hired at Green Bay, per release. McCabe will join head coach Sundance Wicks as an assistant coach.

“I am overwhelmed with gratitude to be coming home!” McCabe said. “My fiancé Olivia and I want to thank Coach Wicks, Josh Moon, and the entire UWGB family for welcoming us. They have all worked hard at returning the Phoenix basketball program to its rightful place and continue to push it forward. I promise to work every single day and do my best to meet the standard that has been set in Green Bay! Let’s RISE!”

McCabe was brought in by former head coach Josh Eilert last June to join the West Virginia staff as an assistant. McCabe, who just completed his eligibility at UNLV in 2023, now will begin his second assistant stint as one of the young emerging coaches in college basketball.

“2018 Wisconsin Mr. Basketball is coming home!” Wicks said. “I am jacked up to add Coach McCabe to our already elite coaching staff and for Jordan and Olivia to come home to the Fox Valley. One of the most important aspects of our program is the transformation of the young men who suit up for the Fighting Phoenix. Jordan’s ability to connect with players on the floor and off is what stood out most to me. We want connected and competitive players, as well as coaches, and Jordan hits those marks.”

As a player, McCabe suited up for the Mountaineers from 2018-21, appearing in 94 games under Bob Huggins. McCabe played two seasons at UNLV after that before joining Eilert’s staff.

I can’t believe DeVries wouldn’t retain McCabe just because he is popular with players and fans.

J5 is totally awesome and getting hired at the University of Wisconsin just shows how highly he is regarded among college basketball coaches outside West Virginia. Not only did we lose Jordan but we lost Carmello Adkins who was likely to be a star here if we had been smart and kept McCabe.

Insecurity and petty jealousy robbed us of a surefire coaching superstar and all the players his magnetic aura attracts. DeVries just didn’t want a likely replacement on the bench. He should have been like Huggy Bear and hired only the best assistants and not be afraid of having elite assistants.
