WVU Baseball Drops Series-Opener at Home Against Coastal Carolina

The West Virginia University baseball team saw its win streak snapped at three games on Friday with a 5-2 loss to visiting Coastal Carolina on Friday at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The Mountaineers (7-6) allowed four runs in the top of the fourth inning and could not battle back to take the lead.

Part of WVU’s problem Friday came in the form of errors. West Virginia had two of them, and assistant coach Steve Sabins said they certainly hurt his team’s chances.

“It all came down to us handling the ball and playing catch again,” Sabins said. “When we handle the ball, and when we play catch, then we have a chance to win every single game. This one kind of snuck away from us.”

Friday’s loss went to WVU senior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf (1-2). who let up four runs (two earned) on five hits to go with six strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings of work. Coastal’s Reid VanScoter allowed one run on four hits over five innings with five strikeouts and no walks to get the win.

Senior catcher/outfielder Paul McIntosh led the WVU attack on Friday with a 2 for 4 performance with two RBI.

Coastal and West Virginia continue their three-game series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
