Gameday WVU vs. TCU: October 23

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Starting conference play 0-3 is unacceptable, and WVU head coach Neal Brown is well aware. Today’s matchup between the WVU Mountaineers (2-4) and the TCU Horned Frogs (3-3) will pit the Big 12 foes against each other for the 11th time, and is a crucial, insurance game for West Virginia, especially coming off a BYE week as fresh as the coaches have voiced. It has to be a win.

Brown is seeking a welcome reprieve from his 0-7 road game streak, while TCU head coach Gary Patterson is itching for a series win. It’s been three years since the Horned Frogs have beaten the Mountaineers, and although the series stands tied at two in Fort Worth, today, it’s anyone’s game. Both teams currently sit at the bottom of the Big 12 Conference; TCU comes in at No. 7 and TCU brings up the rear at No. 9. This needs to be a Mountaineer win to help this 2-4 squad toward bowl eligibility. It won’t be a cake walk though, and it’s going to come down to leadership.

WVU offensive coordinator Gerad Parker said, “Leadership’s very easy to do in summer workouts and things, but now, we’re in it. We’ve got six weeks under our belt of games, and now, to get where we want to go, we’re going to have to take a step in leadership roles, as players and as staff, for us to get where we want to go. It’s very easy to lead when things are going well. It’s now a much harder challenge to lead when maybe it isn’t at times. We’re going to have to be great at that…”

Since Brown joined the Mountaineers in 2019, the WVU-TCU matchup has been anything but calm. West Virginia has won the past two games 20-17 (2019) and 24-6 (2020), but facing this 2021 team could present more issues than anticipated. Through six games, TCU’s resident rushing quarterback Max Duggan has not only rushed for 231 yards and two touchdowns; he’s also thrown for 1,349 yards and 13 touchdowns. To compare productivity, WVU QB1 Jarret Doege, nearly entirely a passing quarterback, is at 1,444 passing yards and eight touchdowns, but has tallied five interceptions to Duggan’s two.

The Horned Frogs are only 4.5 point favorites at Amon G. Carter Stadium, and the over/under sits at 56.5, according to today’s FanDuel update. We’ll have all your pregame updates leading up to the 7:30 p.m. EST kickoff right here.
