WVU Basketball has hired Nelson Hernandez as the team’s general manager, sources told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. Hernandez just completed his first season at Oklahoma State, serving as the director of player development for Mike Boynton’s staff.

Hernandez will become WVU’s general manager as that role continues to grow in college athletics with the transfer portal and NIL. Over on the football side, West Virginia hired Drew Fabianich in July 2023 as the team’s general manager. Now the change is happening in hoops as well.

Before Oklahoma State, Hernandez has been at plenty of different schools and had many titles within the game. Hernandez has worked as video coordinator for Utah State (2010-14) and Clemson (2014-15), director of player development at Wright State (2015-16), director of basketball operations at VCU (2016-17) and LSU (2017-22).

West Virginia officially has assistant Nick Norton on staff from Drake. Norton held a few titles since joining the Drake staff in 2021: assistant director of operations, director of operations and recently director of player development. Norton played collegiate basketball at UAB (2014-18) and Drake (2018-19). Norton played in the NBA G-League in 2019 for the South Bay Lakers.

West Virginia can hire up to five main assistants while working on the support staff as well. With DeVries’ top assistants from Drake taking other jobs, the first-year WVU head coach will have to get creative this spring.
