WVU HC Darian DeVries joined CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein on a podcast to discuss his first couple of months on the West Virginia job. DeVries was asked about Bob Huggins and if he’s had any contact with the former head coach.

“So far we’ve only exchanged a couple of text messages right after I took the job,” DeVries told Rothstein.

“But certainly have tremendous respect for coach Huggins, his tremendous coaching career and what he’s done here at West Virginia. You watch his teams play over the years and you admire how hard they play. He’s a big reason that this fanbase is what it is. They love their basketball here and they’re very passionate about it,” he added.

DeVries also mentioned that he’s welcoming all alumni with open arms as he hopes to make them proud of what the former Mountaineers have built in the past.

“We’ve had a lot of really good basketball players that have played here and are still around the program. We certainly welcome them every day with open arms [because] this is their home and they’re the ones that built this place.”

John Flowers, WVU’s forward from 2007-11, presented DeVries with an endorsement message from West Virginia Basketball alumni when he took the job.

During Huggins’ annual fish fry, the Basketball Hall of Fame coach was asked about a call with DeVries.

“I don’t know enough to say anything. I’m not trying to duck the question, I don’t know enough. [DeVries] called me and I tried to explain to him that now is a bad time for me,” Huggins said to WDTV 5. “Because I’ve been in southern West Virginia, I’ve been in northern West Virginia. I’ve been everywhere. I’ve been everywhere trying to help the people in the state of West Virginia. That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to see what I can do to help the people in the state of West Virginia.”
