Michael Hawkins Picks Up More National Recognition From Virginia Win
Completing his big week, WVU’s Michael Hawkins takes home another prestigious individual honor. On Tuesday, Hawkins was named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week recipient for his play in West Virginia’s win over then No. 25 Virginia.
Below is the write up from the Walter Camp group about why Hawkins, also named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and a member of the Davey O’Brien “Great 8” list, was their choice:
“Guiding the WVU offense in its 38-27 win over then-No. 25 Virginia, Michael Hawkins Jr. threw for 190 yards and two scores. Named the Big 12 Offensive Player of Week, Hawkins Jr. also set career highs in rushing with 123 yards and three touchdowns. He became the first Big 12 quarterback to score five touchdowns against a ranked opponent since 2019 and the first FBS signal caller to achieve the feat this season.”
The sophomore became only the fourth player in WVU football annals to register at least three rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns in the same game, joining an exclusive list of two, Ira Errett Rodgers and Pat White, whose names adorn the Milan Puskar Stadium wall.
Hawkins exceeded 100 yards passing and rushing for the third-straight game. And in Charlotte, he completed 10-of-17 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns through the air and then added 123 yards on 18 carries and three more scores on the ground as WVU defeated Virginia 38-27.
For the season, the Oklahoma transfer is now the top-graded quarterback in the country, according to Pro Football Focus, with a stellar 93.5 average. The Dallas resident is tops in the nation averaging 18.3 yards per completion, while leading the conference in passing efficiency (217.3) and yards per pass attempt (12.6).
His three-game passing totals include 26 completions in 38 attempts for 477 yards and five touchdowns. He has also contributed 322 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.
