WVU Football HC Rich Rodriguez calling plays

(By Jorden Crews, Blue Gold Sports) – In preparation for the transfer portal opening on Jan. 2, many players have already announced their planned entries, including some names at positions that WVU football could pursue.

Considering that the Mountaineers are “targeting every position” in the portal, one could craft an extremely broad list of potential targets at any position. With that in mind, we will start by narrowing the focus down to the quarterback position and list four potential transfers that would make sense for WVU to target as the Mountaineers will look to add at least one quarterback transfer once the portal opens.

Colton Joseph (6’2 190) [Old Dominion] – 2 Years of Eligibility Remaining

While he may not have the “West Virginia connections” that some of the other names on this list do, his stats and style of play perfectly embody what you picture when you think of a Rich Rodriguez quarterback. Plus, he would only have to travel a state over as he is transferring from ODU, which is located in Virginia.

Coming off of a year in which he earned Sun Belt Player of the year after totaling 2,624 passing yards and 1,007 rushing yards while scoring 34 total touchdowns, many believed he would be one of the most sought after quarterbacks in the entire portal. However, while he will still be highly-valued, since the announcement of a slew of high-profile Power Conference quarterbacks planning to enter the portal as well, Joseph is now likely more potentially attainable for WVU.

Rocco Becht (6’1 194) [Iowa State] – 1 Year of Eligibility Remaining

With Matt Campbell leaving Iowa State for Penn State and Becht announcing his departure not long thereafter, many believe it is a forgone conclusion that Becht is heading to Happy Valley. While that indeed may end up being the case, you still can’t make this list and not include his name because of the obvious WVU tie with his dad, Anthony Becht, honored as a WVU Sports Hall of Fame tight end last season.

Becht started for the Cyclones for three seasons, posting a record of 26-13 during his time there and threw for over 9,000 yards and 64 touchdowns while running for another 500 yards and 19 more scores during that span.

Jadyn Davis (6’0 190) [Michigan] – 3 Years of Eligibility Remaining

This is one with an interesting more WVU adjacent tie than it is a direct tie to the school. With the potential tie being who his high school coach was, as Davis was rated as a top-10 quarterback recruit in the 2024 class coming out of Providence Day School in North Carolina, led by head coach Chad Grier. That surname should sound familiar to Mountaineer Nation as he is the father of former WVU quarterback Will Grier. While Davis had yet to really get on the field at Michigan, his talent and upside is certainly still present and he has a skill set that would make him a great fit in a Rich Rod offense.

Ju’Juan Johnson (6’0 210) [LSU] – 3 Years of Eligibility Remaining

Johnson may be the most interesting name on the list. Not only is he probably the fastest of the bunch, but he is also likely the most versatile. During his time at LSU, he has played quarterback, running back and defensive back. Many believe his future to be at the running back or receiver positions, however, in Rich Rod’s offense I believe he could be a fit at quarterback. Regardless, with how much this staff has talked about wanting to have multi-faceted players that can play more than one position, he is worth taking a shot on even if he would end up playing another position.
