West Virginia Finishes at No. 24 in Final AP Poll

With the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament, the final AP Top 25 Poll of the 2019-20 season was released on Wednesday and West Virginia finished the season as the No. 24 ranked team.

That is two spots down from the team’s most recent No. 22 ranking, as the Mountaineers were jumped by No. 22 Houston and No. 23 Butler.

The Mountaineers climbed as high as No. 12 in the AP Poll twice this season, but two three-game losing streaks down the stretch had the team unranked two weeks ago. They got back in the Top 25 with a win at Baylor. Since breaking in at No. 25, West Virginia spent 13 weeks in the Top 25 this season, including 11 consecutive.

The Mountaineers would have played the Oklahoma Sooners in the first round of the Big 12 tournament last week before the Big 12 canceled the championship in response to the coronavirus outbreak. WVU was also projected to be a six or seven seed in the NCAA Tournament before the NCAA canceled that.

This is the fifth time in the last six season West Virginia finished the season ranked.
