It’s been a busy news day surrounding the Backyard Brawl.

On the day that West Virginia secured its quarterback for the 2022 season, Kedon Slovis’s former teammate and Georgia quarterback JT Daniels, Pitt announced the addition of four more Pitt-WVU games.

While there were games in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 already in place, renewing the series for the first time in 11 seasons, four additional games have been added in 2029, 2030, 2031 and 2032.

“Passionate rivalry games like the Backyard Brawl make college football special,” Director of Athletics Heather Lyke said in Pitt’s release. “The extension of this series is exciting to announce given our programs’ shared history and geography. It’s a rivalry that resonates throughout the region and across the country. That will certainly be on display when we renew ties this September at Heinz Field in front of a national television audience.”

With 104 all-time meetings, dating back to the first game played in 1895, Pitt holds a 61-40-3 record. However, WVU won the last three meetings — including a 21-20 win in 2011 at Milan-Puskar Stadium in Morgantown.

Pitt is coming off an 11-3 season, capped by the first ACC championship in team history and New Year’s Six bowl appearance. WVU went 6-7 in 2021, losing to Minnesota in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. With both teams easing new starting quarterbacks in the system this summer, the Backyard Brawl in 2022 could be a season-defining moment for both sides.

The 2022 Backyard Brawl is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 1 at Heinz Field. The time will be announced officially at a later date, but it’s set for a night-time kickoff.
