West Virginia to host NCAA Regional

The West Virginia baseball program comes in as a No. 1 seed and will host an NCAA Tournament regional for the first time since 1955. This comes as no surprise following the best season in program history going 34-18 in the regular season and 37-20 overall.

“Words can’t even tell you, if you’re not from Morgantown.” Said West Virginia head coach Randy Mazey after the semifinal win over Texas Tech Saturday night. “You don’t know this, but we’ve had baseball at WVU for 130 years, give or take a few, and have never hosted a regional. Hosting a regional changes the face of your entire program. We’ll put four or five thousand people in our stadium, and they’ll be chanting and screaming ‘Lets Go Mountaineers’. That would be one of the best atmospheres in college baseball.”

The No. 18 West Virginia Mountaineers are coming off a Big 12 Championship appearance after finishing fourth in a conference that was ranked second overall in the RPI. WVU had to go through the regular season champion Texas Tech Red Raiders to get into the Big 12 title game and lost to the third seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys 5-2.

The opening round starts May 31st (Friday) – June 3rd (Monday). The rest of the field will be announced at noon Monday on ESPNU.
