MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Knowing the pressure on the WVU defense to step up in 2026, defensive coordinator Zac Alley believes his approach will bring out the best in his players.

Alley discussed the difference in this year’s unit compared to what he had to work with during his first season in Morgantown, especially at this point on the calendar, after West Virginia’s Gold-Blue Festival event to close the spring period on April 18.

“The spring game is obviously fun because you get to see guys play, go out there and compete a little bit. See who can make plays, who can’t, who can make tackles when it’s live fire,” said Alley about what he was looking for while coaching the scrimmage part of the day, a scrimmage his Blue team won 39-30 in large part thanks to a fumble recovery for a score.

But for a coach who prides himself on creating a complex scheme, he was only able to utilize five plays during the scrimmage, as a directive from Rich Rodriguez.

“The simplicity of it was two fold. To help our guys feel confidence in some of the base things we do and then ‘I’m not one for showing things if I ain’t got to’.”

Beyond just what happened in the scrimmage, Alley is confident he was able to accomplish more throughout the spring this year. Being able to vet recruits, and have more money to spend, helped him bring in more talented players who showed more fundamentally sound and more ready to go.

While the defense is still a work in progress, Alley believes in his defense overall.

“I think the guys have an understanding of ‘okay, this is what I’m thinking when I call these things,'” he said to compliment their ability to understand him and the scheme as a whole.

Like with Rodriguez’s offense, Alley has a much better idea of who his starters will be and what his rotation will look like going into fall camp in August.
