Which Backup WVU Football Running Back Stands Out the Most?
For as much as Cam Cook has been showered with praise all offseason, what happens behind him on the WVU football depth chart will also determine the success of the team as a whole.
Count West Virginia running backs coach Jay Boulware among those high on Cook, but he also addressed what’s going on with the rest of his room after practice on Wednesday.
“The guy of that crew, I like what all of them are doing โ they all bring something to the table, man. Boswell with his speed. Heโs got tremendous, tremendous speed. If you donโt take a good angle, heโs gone,” said Boulware about Martavious Boswell.
However, Christopher Talley is who he called out as the star of the backups beyond Amari Latimer, the one expected to be called upon to spell Cook first.
“Talley is probably the one that Iโve been the most pleased with after the first two,” he added. “Heโs got something special, man. And I said it from the day that I first saw him on the field. Heโs smooth. He kind of glides. Heโs got speed. He understands how to get down low and finish runs. And heโs fearless. Heโll go in there and runโฆI mean, heโs just got something to him that I really like. I look forward to coaching that kid over the next several years here and seeing how he continues to develop because I think heโs going to be special as well.”
Boulware kept going….
“Heโs really good (off the ball). He can catch. He needs to work on blocking a little bit. He knows that; thatโs not a secret. Heโs not as big as the other guys, so heโs got to bring it every time. But heโs put on some good weight. He came in here at 180-something, and heโs 190-something pounds now. Iโve been really pleased with the work that our strength staff has done with him, our dietitians, and everybody in this building has done a great job with our running backs.”
