Will Grier is going to get every opportunity to really show why he deserves to be an NFL quarterback on Saturday night.

As the Cowboys close out their preseason, Grier will get the majority of the snaps under center when Dallas hosts the Raiders. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters like Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News about his plans for the former Mountaineer on Thursday.

The Cowboys then traded for former first round pick Trey Lance Friday afternoon. It was after this that they told Grier that he will not be on the team moving forward but still start Saturday night as a farewell and to help him showcase himself for other teams, according to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News.

This isn’t too much of a surprise and it’s common for teams to give significant time in the final preseason game to players they are still evaluating and are on the fringe of making the team. So far, Grier has done everything he can to show why he belongs on the roster.

Just last week, the former Mountaineer put up solid numbers and made a few highlights against Jacksonville. Grier completed 22 of 31 passes for 199 yards while throwing two touchdowns. One of his touchdowns was a 15-yard strike to wide receiver Jalen Tolbert. This play was posted on social media by both the Cowboys and WVU football.

Will Grier Continues Fight for Roster Spot with Impressive Preseason Performance for Cowboys

After finishing out his college career with two seasons at West Virginia, Grier was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. He then joined the Cowboys in 2021 in a backup role behind Pro Bowler Dak Prescott.

Grier was on track to be Dallas’ main backup last season before suffering an injury in the preseason. Once healthy, he went from signing with the Cowboys practice squad to eventually landing on the active roster behind Cooper Rush while Prescott was out with an injury.

The pressure is on Will Grier to be at his best when Las Vegas comes to Dallas. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 8 pm ET.
