WVU Baseball Logs 8th Straight Win Thanks to Chase Swain’s Big Night

WVU Baseball rolled to their eighth straight win on Friday, April 11, taking down the Houston Cougars 9-2 on the road.
Griffin Kirn got the win, striking out five Cougars in six innings of two-run ball, while Chase Swain tripled and plated three runs.
The Mountaineers (28-4) tried a double steal of home in the first inning, but Houston shortstop Tyler Cox managed to fire back to the plate in time to retire Skylar King. Instead, Swain got things started in the second with an RBI single, then tacked on another run in the fourth with his three-bagger.
That kicked off a two-out rally that saw West Virginia load the bases and push their lead to 5-0. An RBI single from Jace Rinehart nearly added another run, but Cougars left fielder Jake Tatomโs throw reached home plate before Logan Sauve.
Houston added a run in each of the next two innings, while a Swain sacrifice fly created his third RBI of the evening.
Kirn began the seventh inning but allowed a pair of base runners, queuing head coach Steve Sabins to phone the bullpen. Reese Bassinger wriggled out of the jam with a fieldersโ choice and a double play, finishing the game and retiring all but two of the batters he faced; Sauve and Gavin Kelly singled home insurance runs in the eighth.
