WVU Basketball Signs St. John’s Transfer G Joson Sanon

The WVU basketball program announces the signing of Joson Sanon to join the Mountaineers for the 2026-27 season.

Sanon, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound junior guard from Fall River, Massachusetts, comes to Morgantown from St. John’s. He committed to West Virginia earlier in the month.

“Joson has played at a high level for a long time and is a competitor who works at a high rate,” WVU head coach Ross Hodge said in a statement. “He’s been well-coached throughout college and has played in high leverage situations including Big 12 games and NCAA Tournament games. We are excited for him to be a Mountaineer!”

Sanon, a 6-foot-5 guard, appeared in 32 games while starting 11 as a sophomore for Rick Pitino last season, averaging 7.2 points and 2.1 rebounds on 20.5. minutes per game. He is no stranger to the Big 12, as he played his freshman season at Arizona State in 2024-25, averaging 11.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

Sanon had also heard from Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, Oregon, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati, NC State, Texas A&M, UCLA, Mississippi State, Georgetown, Texas Tech and Texas.

As a sophomore at St. John’s, Sanon was named to the Preseason Third Team All-Big East, Sanon scored in double figures 13 times, including a season-high 16 points against Auburn. He nearly racked up a double-double in the Big East opener against DePaul with 15 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Sanon became the first St. John’s player to make 12 free throws without a miss since 2017, going 12-for-12 against Kentucky. He scored 15 points in the Big East semifinal win against Seton Hall and had 10 points against UConn.

Sanon attended Arizona State as a freshman, appearing in 27 games with nine starts. He averaged 11.9 points per game, shooting 42.2% from the floor and 36.9% from 3-point range. Sanon scored a career-high 28 points at Utah, going 11-of-20 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. He logged 19 points at Arizona and registered 13 points and seven rebounds in the Big 12 Tournament against Kansas State. Sanon scored 22 points against Cal Poly, 21 points against Grand Canyon, 18 points against BYU and 17 points at Oklahoma State. He averaged 18.8 points per game over his final five games.

Sanon was a consensus Top 25 prospect in the class of 2024 coming out of Vermont Academy. He was named the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) AAA Player of the Year after leading Vermont Academy to a NEPSAC-AAA Championship and a National Prep Championship appearance during his senior season.
