WVU G Seth Wilson Knows Everyone Will Need to Step Up

WVU junior guard Seth Wilson was one of four returning players for West Virginia in their chaotic offseason. Wilson believes everyone will need to step up in the absence of RaeQuan Battle, who had his waiver denied on Monday.

“Now everyone has to step up and be prepared but a guy like that, that’s tough. A guy that can do what he can do on the floor, that’s tough,” Wilson said. “Everybody’s going to pick him up as we go and hopefully he can join us but we’re all going to be ready at the same time.”

Wilson will be one of the most needed to step up for Battle as he is the only true traditional shooting guard on the roster. Wilson averaged 4.2 points last season on 39% shooting from the field and 42% from three last year. Wilson scored in double figures against Texas Tech (15), Portland State (12), Baylor (11) and Buffalo (10). The Lorain, Ohio native had eight games of two or more threes made.

Wilson, and the remaining Mountaineers, were granted 30 days following Bob Huggins’ resignation to enter the transfer portal with no penalty. The 6-foot-1 guard knew where home was.

“I’m a man of faith, prayed about it. My heart was here, I wanted to be here regardless of what was going on. This is where I wanted to be so I stayed,” Wilson said.

Wilson has been working with new WVU assistants Alex Ruoff and Jordan McCabe the most in the gym. Wilson has focused on improving his ball handling as well as his shot selection. During the never-ending offseason, that’s all Wilson could do.

“Personally the thought process was control what you can control and continue to work through what’s around you,” Wilson said. “Being in the gym every day, that’s pretty much it. That’s all I could control.”

Wilson, as well as his best friend Kobe Johnson, and Josiah Harris, will be the first players interim HC Josh Eilert looks upon to help replace Battle as they await the appeal decision.
