Safety Osita Smith officially signed with West Virginia

Wilde Lake (MD) safety Osita Smith has officially signed with the Mountaineers.

The 6’2″ 205- pound safety chose West Virginia over other offers from Maryland, Purdue, Wake Forest, Indiana, East Carolina and a few others.

Smith is very comparable to former Mountaineer, Rasul Douglas. Similar height/weight and same effect on the game. He also played wide receiver in high school at a high level which has helped him on the defensive side snagging interceptions. His length and quickness will be a much needed piece to help in stopping the run game, even when coming down from the secondary. He has closing speed and can get to the quarterback fairly quick on corner blitzes.

There is a ton of star-level talent in Osita Smith and he could be the next great safety at West Virginia. It is a pretty lofty and maybe unfair expectation, but potential is certainly there. With safety being a loaded position on the depth chart, it may take a year or two before Smith truly gets his chance to shine, but expect to see him at some point in 2019.
