Coming out of Opelika High School in Alabama in 2016, Benton originally attended Butler Community College in Kansas. He redshirted in 2016 and was rated as a three-star recruit after playing as a safety in 2017.
He came to WVU in 2018 as a JUCO transfer and transitioned to linebacker. He started the season-opener against Tennessee that season but suffered a season-ending knee injury in that game. Benton did not play in 2019 and saw time in six games in 2020.
Benton, a redshirt-senior, will have one season of eligibility remaining due to the NCAA’s blanket eligibility waiver passed for the 2020 season.
