West Virginia Receives Commitment from 2022 3-Star DE Asani Redwood

With National Signing Day less than 24 hours away, West Virginia has received their fourth commitment in the last two days.

Tuesday morning, 2022 3-star defensive end Asani Redwood announced that he would be signing with West Virginia. Redwood (6’4”, 265 pounds) attends Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia and selected WVU over other offers from Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky and East Tennessee State.

Redwood released this statement on Twitter announcing his decision- “First off, I would like to thank God for this opportunity and the blessings me and my family have received. For the next few years of my life, I will be attending West Virginia University. I’m truly grateful for Coach Brown, Coach Lesley and Coach Jackson for giving me and my family this opportunity. I’m grateful for what Collins Hill has done for me to put me in this position.”

Things came together for Redwood and WVU pretty quickly. Although they’ve been scouting and recruiting him for some time, Neal Brown only officially extended Redwood an offer on December 6, while he was making his official visit to Morgantown.

West Virginia Sports Now caught up with Redwood right after his announcement to find out more about his decision and what this day means to him.

“I’m really happy to have committed to West Virginia,” Redwood tells WV Sports Now. “The coaches and players made me feel really at home when I took my visit there. This day is so special for me because two years ago, I didn’t even know that I was going to even be in this position. It’s truly great that I can at least take the pressure of paying for college off my family plus I’ll be doing something that I love. I decided to commit to West Virginia because of how I felt when being around the staff and players. I felt like I was at home and my family loved it. The school having its own hospital and how they are invested in their education and their players. Plus, the winning culture were the factors of me picking West Virginia.”

“I will bring a physical pass rusher to the team. Someone that’s still learning the game but also someone who has led a winning team in high school. I will bring the winning culture I picked up at Collins Hill to West Virginia. It will be fun, stayed tuned because it will be a movie!”

Redwood finished this season with 43 tackles for loss and 19 sacks as his Collins Hills team won the State Championship.

Redwood becomes the 19th new addition to the Mountaineers program this year and the third defensive lineman.  In total, WVU has commitments from 11 defensive players.
