WVU Football recruit DE Obinna Onwuka

WVU football has an official visit with a four-star defensive end recruit coming up in early June. Obinna Onwuka’s visit has been scheduled for a month, but is now less than a week away and could prove to be important to West Virginia’s chances to land such a quality player.

Onwuka (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) has been a high priority class of 2024 recruit for West Virginia since he received an offer from the Mountaineers in late January. He tweeted about his tip to Morgantown while releasing his entire June schedule late Sunday night.

The Upper Marlboro, Maryland native will make his way to Morgantown a month after placing West Virginia on his list of his top seven schools.

At the time, WVU was on his list along with Boston College, Maryland, Memphis, USC, Virginia Tech and Penn State. With Onwuka set to make his final decision and commit to a program on July 1, his June calendar could be a hint at which schools are still in the hunt.

He will also be visiting Wisconsin (the Badgers are a new offer for Onwuka), Boston College and Virginia Tech throughout June.

Onwuka is ranked as the No. 12 player in Maryland, the No. 30 edge-rusher, and the No. 359 player nationally, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

In an interview with WVSN back in January, Onwuka talked about what he’s looking for in a school. “Academics, the culture, and the mutual support of for students” Onkuwa said are the main attributes he wants to find in a college a program before fully committing.

2024 Recruit Obinna Onwuka’s Versatility Would be Invaluable to West Virginia

Onwuka is a versatile player that can play in a 4-3 as an edge rusher or a 3-4 as an outside linebacker. He has the speed to get around the corner and get to pass rushers and ball carriers alike, and even strong enough to get off of would-be blockers and a nice swim move.

Onwuka has the closing speed to get home in the backfield, and even with his natural strength and speed, he can add size to his frame to make himself a real impact player.
