Did Pat McAfee break some news about a coaching legend coming to West Virginia to take over WVU? Even though McAfee had to deliver the message that Nick Saban won’t be coming out of retirement to coach the Mountaineers, another available coach regarded as the best ever voiced his interest on the media mogul’s show.

Is Bill Belichick actually interested in coaching WVU? No, but he sure did have some fun dropping some sarcasm about his possible interest.

“I might have to talk to you about that, Pat,” joked Belichick when met with a question about the new major coaching vacancy.

And while Belichick’s comment, that was said with a smirk, does lend for some fun (like this article), a coach with six Super Bowl titles as a head coach in the NFL is not going to drop down to the college ranks and coach in the Big 12. The only reason Belichick would get back into coaching at this point is to prove he can still do it at a high level and pursue the NFL’s all-time wins record.

The day after WVU announced the firing of Neal Brown, McAfee reiterated that he is willing to help the program find their next head coach, but that coach is just not going to be his friend and ESPN colleague Nick Saban.

โ€œCoach Saban isnโ€™t getting back into coaching but I do believe he is interested in helping West Virginia,โ€ said McAfee.

For some better news, McAfee did explain heโ€™s receiving calls from coaches all over the country, including many high profile ones, asking him to support them as being the next head coach of his beloved Mountaineers.

This continues what McAfee said as his initial reaction to the big news on Sunday.

โ€œThis WVU coaching news has made for a rather wild last few hours.. Iโ€™d like to say.. Thank you Neal Brown for trying your best and representing WVU with class over the last six years. Good luck with everything going forward,โ€ said McAfee as he respectfully recognized Brown first.

But McAfee was far from done there. He also offered a sales pitch to the next head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers and made it clear heโ€™s willing to do his part to help restore the proud tradition of the program.

โ€œNowโ€ฆ thereโ€™s a P4 Head Coaching gig with a GREAT brand/history that doesnโ€™t have a pro team in its state open.. also, a very PASSIONATE fanbase. Iโ€™ve been on the phone quite a bitโ€ฆ something special is possible. Wren Baker is in a great spot. I have faith heโ€™s gonna get it right. Letโ€™s GOOOOOOOO,โ€ added an energized McAfee.

McAfee was vocal with his support and also his criticism when warranted of WVU during Brownโ€™s tenure, but he now appears to be motivated to assist WVU director of athletics Wren Baker and the administration as they search for West Virginiaโ€™s next leader.

And an alum who just happens to be one of the most prominent voices in sports media today involved in the process canโ€™t hurt.

For a related story, Mike Asti and Cody Nespor talked with fans about the Neal Brown firing and possible candidates to become the next WVU football head coach.
