Meet the WVU Basketball Team: Dependable Depth Guard Martin Somerville

After being relatively thin at the point guard spot last year, head coach Ross Hodge helped build depth at the position with junior guard Martin Somerville from the transfer portal.

Somerville brings power conference experience to WVU, as he comes from Florida State. Last year, he appeared in all 33 games, starting 10, and averaged eight points, three rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

Ball control is a significant aspect of Somerville’s game, with an assist to turnover ratio of 2.3 to one. He also set the Division I record of assists in a single game as a freshman at UMass Lowell with 13.

Somerville is a great fit for Hodge’s system, having averaged 1.5 steals per game as well.

Somerville has also shown flashes in the scoring category, with two 23-point performances for his season-highs last year.

Somerville’s scoring ability, defensive prowess and ball-handling confidence makes him a prime option of the bench for WVU. With sophomore guard Amir Jenkins potentially missing time after surgeries for two torn labrums and eligibility concerns, Somerville’s number could be called frequently as a rotational piece.
