Eaglestaff Plays Hero for WVU Basketball in Win Over Kansas State
Senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff came up clutch for WVU basketball in its 59-54 win over Kansas State Tuesday, scoring eight points in the final 3:30.
It was all Kansas State early Tuesday, as the Wildcats scored the firsts even points of the game. WVU, on the other hand, did not get on the board until the 14:11 mark with a dunk from fifth-year guard Chance Moore.
Floyd added WVU’s next points with an and-one layup in transition with the free throw to make the score 10-5 at the 12-minute mark. KSU added another three-pointer before a six-point swing by WVU with senior guard Honor Huff adding his first made three of the night.
The Wildcats made another three-pointer courtesy of senior guard Nate Johnson, but the next Mountaineer run gave them their first lead. Freshman forward DJ Thomas made a mid-range jumper and Huff made his second straight three to tie it up at 16-16 before senior center Harlan Obioha made a layup for the lead at the 4:51 mark.
Kansas State tied it up again with a layup from sophomore guard David Castillo, but WVU responded with a 10-0 run which included two more threes from Huff. The Wildcats added four more points to end the half, but trailed 28-22 going into the locker room.
WVU went up by 10 points to start the second half, but Kansas State responded with an 8-0 run to make the score 36-34 with 13:23 remaining.
The two teams traded baskets for the next four minutes, as WVU kept its lead before a 6-0 swing gave KSU a 47-45 lead at the 8:39 mark.
There was no scoring from either side for the next four minutes before a layup from junior guard PJ Haggerty.
Eaglestaff ended the scoring drought at 3:17 with a second-chance layup. He then made his first three-pointer of the game at the most opportune time to give WVU a 50-49 lead with just over two minutes remaining.
Huff added a three-pointer before Haggerty immediately responded with one of his own. Then, with 43 seconds remaining, Eaglestaff grabbed his own miss on offense and converted an and-one shot with the free throw for a 57-52 lead.
The Mountaineers closed it out, moving to 14-7 on the season and 5-3 in the Big 12.
WVU basketball will play again at 4 p.m. Saturday when the Mountaineers host Baylor.
