MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU basketball sent its seniors off in proper fashion with a 77-62 win over UCF on Senior Day Friday night.

WVU won the opening tip-off and immediately capitalized off it with a floater by senior guard Jasper Floyd. UCF found junior forward Jordan Burks open for a dunk on the other end, but senior forward Brenen Lorient responded with a three for a 5-2 WVU lead.

UCF retook the lead with four straight points, but the Mountaineers responded with a five-point swing with a layup from Lorient and a three from senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff.

The spark grew into a 17-4 run for WVU which included two threes by senior guard Honor Huff and a five-minute scoring drought by the Knights. WVU led 22-10 with 9:53 remaining in the half.

The two teams kept a steady pace going into the half as VWU led 32-23 at the break. Eaglestaff and Lorient led WVU with seven points apiece.

The Knights brought the game within four at 42-38 until fifth-year guard Chance Moore was fouled on a layup attempt before UCF committed a goaltending penalty. He missed the free throw and then fifth-year guard Themus Fulks added another layup.

Huff was fouled on a three, cashing in all three points at the line before drilling a shot from beyond the arc at the 11:04 mark. Moore followed with an and-one layup with the free throw, making it a 53-41 game with 10:22 remaining. Those two field goals marked the first time WVU made two straight baskets unbroken by scores from UCF in the second half.

Huff got fouled on another three-pointer and made all of his attempts from the line before Lorient added another three. Lorient’s three topped off a 15-4 run for a 59-44 lead with just over nine minutes to go.

UCF battled back but could not bring the score within single digits, making it 63-52. However, WVU closed it out for a comfortable victory.

WVU will now have to wait until Saturday night until the Big 12 Tournament bracket is finalized to learn their seed. As it currently stands, WVU is the conference’s No. 9 seed with an overall record of 18-13 and a Big 12 record of 9-9.
