The WVU basketball regular season has come to a close, but there are still questions as to its Big 12 tournament seeding hopes. With the tournament right around the corner, here are the spots where WVU could play.

WVU currently sits at the No. 8 seed in the Big 12 with a 9-9 conference record. The Mountaineers are tied with UCF record wise, but have the edge over the Knights due to a series sweep.

The only game that determines WVU’s fate is Cincinnati vs. TCU at 2 p.m. Saturday. If Cincinnati wins, the Bearcats will secure the No. 7 seed in the tournament and keep WVU at No. 8.

However, if Cincinnati loses to TCU, it will create a three-way tie between Cincinnati, UCF and WVU.

Per the Big 12 tiebreaker procedures, there will be a mini round-robin amongst the teams using the results from their head-to-head competition. WVU would come out on top in this instance, considering it went 2-0 against both UCF and Cincinnati this season.

A four-way tie is in place as well, as BYU sits at 8-9 in the Big 12 and plays No. 10 Texas Tech at 10:30 Saturday. Nothing would change for WVU if this were the case, as WVU also beat BYU.

Given the tie breaking procedures and potential results, the highest seed WVU could get is No. 7 and the lowest it could get is No. 8. In short, WVU will receive a first-round bye no matter what happens.

If WVU is the No. 7 seed, the team will play at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. If the current spot holds, the Mountaineers will play at 3 p.m. Tuesday instead.
