WVU Baseball Ambushed By Columbia At Home
WVU Baseball lost their second game in a row on Friday, March 6, falling 7-4 to the Columbia Lions after a five-run second inning they never recovered from.
After a week marred by Chase Meyer’s dismissal and a series of schedule changes, Columbia jumped on West Virginia (8-3) starter Dawson Montesa, starting the second with a double. They proceeded to bat around the order, the rally ending when right fielder Armani Guzman mowed down shortstop Jack Kail attempting to score from second.
Montesa rebounded to retire the last six batters he faced, including two strikeouts in the third, but the Lions tacked on another run in the fifth as reliever Ian Korn settled in. West Virginia broke through for two runs in the bottom of the frame, a Sean Smith walk and a Brodie Kresser double sparking a small rally, and an error from Kail helped the inning continue.
The Mountaineers continued to press, scraping across runs in the sixth and seventh innings when Guzman scored on a wild pitch and Gavin Kelly lifted a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Kresser home. They drew no closer, however, going down in order in the eighth and stranding a leadoff triple from Brock Wills in the ninth.
WVU Baseball will attempt to tie the series beginning at noon on Saturday, March 7.
