ESPN FPI Changes Its Tune on WVU Football for Rest of Season
It’s amazing how much things can change in just a few weeks. Initially, few believed in the Mountaineers this season. But now even the ESPN FPI is changing its tune as WVU sits at 3-1.
West Virginia is headed for a matchup with TCU on the road after three-straight home wins. WVU was even able to win back-to-back games with backup quarterback Nicco Marchiol under center. It remains to be seen if the way Neal Brown’s team is winning is sustainable, but the wins are on the board nonetheless.
Even though oddsmakers are already predicting an impending loss for WVU this week, West Virginia has been making it a habit to buck what Vegas predicts. The ESPN FPI is only giving West Virginia a 22.6% chance to beat TCU, but actually has the Mountaineers with a 50+% probability for victory four more times and just under in another game.
If what the ESPN FPI projects holds up, WVU would finish with a 7-5, or maybe even 8-4, overall record. That’s a far cry from what the ESPN FPI was saying months ago and what many “experts” thought would happen.
