Fifth-year WVU wrestling senior Peyton Hall captured the 165-pound championship at the 43rd annual Cliff Keen Invitational over the weekend in Las Vegas.

Hall became the first West Virginia wrestler to win their bracket at the annual event since three-time national champion Greg Jones took home the title at 174 pounds in 2002, as well as the first to reach the finals since fifth-year senior Dustin Rogers finished runner-up at heavyweight in 2007.

The Chester, W.Va., native defeated No. 4 seed Hunter Garvin of Stanford in the semifinals, marking the second time Hall has defeated Garvin this season, joining his victory at the NWCA All-Star Classic at Penn State on Nov. 16. Hall fell to Garvin at the Big 12 Championships last year.

This time, the top-seeded Hall defeated Garvin via a 12-7 decision.

In the title bout, Hall edged Oklahoma State’s Cameron Amine 4-1 in sudden victory. Hall took down Amine with 27 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to seal the win.

West Virginia redshirt senior Dennis Robin was the lone other Mountaineer to place in the event, with Robin capturing seventh at 184 pounds.

As a team, the Mountaineers landed in 11th place with 40.5 team points, which marked the highest finish for the program since the 2007 squad took 12th.

No. 18 West Virginia will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 15, where the Mountaineers will take on Cal Baptist in their Big 12 opener at Oak Glen High School at 4 p.m.
