WVU Women’s Basketball crushed the ETSU Buccaneers 85-40 on Friday, Dec. 6 despite the absence of their best player.

For the first time in her four year career with the No. 15 Mountaineers, JJ Quinerly didn’t play a single minute, remaining on the sideline with a wrap on her left wrist. Quinerly dealt with a run of injuries towards the end of last season but always managed to make her way into the starting lineup: she’s ready and willing to put herself on the line if able, so it’s noteworthy that she had to sit out of this contest after four days off.

The Mountaineers forced 29 turnovers and allowed just 5 offensive rebounds, winning 39-17 on the glass and limiting ETSU to just 43 shots. Their offense looked sloppy at times in the 10:30 a.m. start, committing 25 turnovers themselves, but their defense carried the day.

Scoring runs drove the Mountaineers’ win. After the Buccaneers opened the scoring with a Braylyn Milton layup, West Virginia reeled off the next 18 points, allowing just four baskets in the first period and seven in the entire first half. Four Mountaineers’ starters hit double digits: Jordan Harrison led the field with 17 points, while Sydney Shaw made three first quarter threes as West Virginia leapt ahead early.

The Buccaneers’ shooting woes continued out of the break, as they made just three shots in the third period before West Virginia’s defense backed off in the final ten minutes with the game well out of hand.

WVU Women’s Basketball moves to 9-1 on the season. Next on the schedule is a Sunday, Dec. 15 tilt with Temple — a nine day layoff that will give Quinerly plenty of time to heal — set to begin at 2 p.m.
