West Virginia head coach Neal Brown announced his assistant coaches and their responsibilities Monday morning. When looking at their recruiting territories, the state of West Virginia gets a lot of attention. Every assistant has a region of the state. That’s a big change to what this program has done in the past.

“I think being the in the state here and having a strong brand within this geographic footprint is critical.” Stated Brown after 2019 signing day. “We feel like we can compete and win against anybody. If we do our job, are diligent and build relationships, then we should have as good of a chance as anybody in West Virginia and all the states that surround it.”

He’s done just that, and he’s emphasized building “relationships.” In their recruiting footprint, it’s building connections with the high schools and their coaches. It’s about getting into the school and evaluating players for themselves and finding the best players that fit their system.

This doesn’t mean that this staff won’t offer kids from other areas. However, sticking within the regions they have built relationships over the years and continually being visible in the schools will pay dividends.

Brown has also talked about having a recruiting division within the football program. “You need a recruiting division almost within your staff, and that’s what we’re trying to establish here. We’ve made some hires, we have some additions to make and hopefully, we’ll do that here in the near future.” Proclaimed Brown.

It’s early in his career at WVU and you can deny his success at Troy. It’s hard not to get excited when you see the attention to detail he puts into recruiting. Recruits are speaking highly of Brown and his staff and building personal relationships has paid off early for the Mountaineers.
