National Analysts Mention Prominent Name to Replace Neal Brown at WVU

Neal Brown is still West Virginia’s head coach, but that’s not stoping people from speculating about the future of WVU football. WVU fans are also far from the only ones wondering who could be an option to replace Brown if the Mountaineers do decide to move on.
On a recent episode of the “Cover 3” podcast presented by CBS Sports, the crew brought up West Virginia when discussing schools who may fire their current coach. And during that discussion, one prominent name with ties to the state was mentioned as a possible top candidate.
“Yeah, he’s on Sirius XM — he talks real fast, he’s got a national championship ring, he can go right back and tell you about all the hills in West Virginia,” said host Chip Patterson.
He then went through Fisher as an option while responding to a question by CBS Sports analyst Tom Fornelli.
“That’s the question I’ve got,” added Kanell. “He doesn’t need the money, that could hurt the legacy worse than it’s already been hurt. That’s where a lot of these coaches, Dan Mullen is another one, they’re going to sit there and if they aren’t fully enamored and feel like it’s a place they can kind of be guaranteed 8 wins, they’re probably not going to take it,” answered Patterson.
Regardless how the season finishes, WVU fans are still overwhelmingly out on Brown. With two games left in the 2024 season, Brown holds a 36-34 overall record since arriving in Morgantown in 2019. He has two bowl wins, most recently winning the Duke’s Mayo Bowl to cap off the 2023 season. WVU has never been able to spend even one week ranked by the Associated Press during his tenure, with their only ranking in general coming when the finished the 2023 season at No. 25 in the Coaches Poll.
As for Fisher, 59, the Clarksburg, W.Va. native has a 128-48 record as a head coach from time spent with Florida State and Texas A&M. He led the Seminoles to the 2013 BCS national championship and won three ACC titles. However, he only accomplished a 45-25 mark with the Aggies. Fisher has an 8-2 bowl record.
