Rich Rodriguez Accomplishes First for WVU Since 2018 With Week 2 Win
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU’s dominating win over UT Martin allowed Rich Rodriguez to already accomplish one of his goals for his second tenure. The 52-7 win moved West Virginia’s record to 2-0, marking the first time the Mountaineers have opened a season 2-0 since 2018.
The UT Martin victory followed WVU beating Coastal Carolina 31-24 in the 2026 season opener.
While every win counts, it’s important to note that the slow starters during Neal Brown’s tenure (2019-2024) did often include playing two Power Four programs during the non conference schedule, a rarity around the country at the time. Brown’s team also kicked off four consecutive seasons against major conference teams, including Maryland in 2021, the rebirth of the Backyard Brawl in 2022 and then back-to-back years against Penn State in 2023 and 2024. Only one of those three games took place in Morgantown.
The true test for Rodriguez’s present day team will be what’s up next. West Virginia will now travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a neutral site matchup with Virginia. Kickoff from Bank of America Stadium is set for 7:30 pm ET on Saturday, Sept. 19.
