As Neal Brown builds his new staff at North Texas, he’s looking to a familiar name from his time at West Virginia to coach his quarterbacks again.

Brown is expected to hire former WVU quarterbacks coach Tyler Allen for the same role, according to Chris Hummer of CBS Sports. Allen also worked with Brown as an analyst at Texas in 2025.

Allen, who initially served on Brown’s West Virginia staff in 2019 and then returned from 2022-204, was promoted ahead of the 2024 season after Season Reagan left to be Troy’s offensive coordinator.

Other than working under Brown at WVU, Allen also served as quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville State. Allen started his coaching career at LSU in 2016 as an offensive student assistant and then first met Brown in 2018 as a grad assistant at Troy.

Brown was officially introduced as North Texas’ new head coach during a press conference on Monday.

North Texas finished the 2025 regular season 11-1 and in first place in the American Conference and a birth in the conferenceโ€™s championship game. Former Mean Green head coach Eric Morris left North Texas for the Oklahoma State job.

After success at Troy, which included three-straight 10 plus-win seasons and a staple victory over LSU, WVU hired Brown to be the programโ€™s 35 the head coach in 2019.

Unfortunately for Brown, he was never able to achieve anything close to that with West Virginia. The Mountaineers went 37-35 in six seasons under Brown with three bowl game appearances. The high point of Brownโ€™s tenure was a nine-win 2023 season that finished with a victory in the Dukeโ€™s Mayo Bowl over North Carolina.
