Pro Day Could be Stock Helper for some Mountaineers

The 2019 NFL Draft is just around the corner and several Mountaineers are hoping to hear their name called as they look to begin the next chapter of their football career.

Morgantown will be the center of attention tomorrow for several NFL scouts as West Virginia will host its annual Pro Day beginning at 9:30 a.m. and lasting until 12 p.m. at the Caperton Indoor Facility.

The six Mountaineers that participated in the NFL Combine (Will Grier, David Sills V, Gary Jennings, Yodny Cajuste, Trevon Wesco and David Long Jr.) all had strong showings in Indianapolis.

Offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste threw up 32 reps on the bench press which was the 4th best by an offensive lineman and 7th overall at the combine.

Tight end Trevon Wesco had the most reps of any tight end with 24 and really impressed scouts during that weekend.

Wide receiver Gary Jennings continued the Mountaineers strong presence at the bench press throwing up 20 reps which was the 5th most of the receivers group.

Tackling machine David Long Jr. showed his speed with a 4.45 40-yard dash (4th among LB’s).

So where do these Mountaineers currently project to be drafted? This is the mock draft projections according to Draftsite.com

Round 2 Pick 64: Yodny Cajuste (Patriots)

Round 3 Pick 70: Will Grier (Buccaneers)

Round 3 Pick 85: David Sills V (Ravens)

Round 4 Pick 130: Gary Jennings (Chargers)

Round 5 Pick 162: David Long Jr. (Bears)

TE Trevon Wesco UDFA

It’s easy to say that these projections may be slightly off on a couple of these guys, such as Grier, Long and Cajuste. So, let’s break it down.

Will Grier

Will Grier has been constantly questioned about his arm strength which is something that NFL scouts are concerned with. Personally, I don’t visualize any issues with arm strength whatsoever. In fact, he was even clocked at throwing well over 60 mph, which should eliminate that concern immediately.

With Grier getting a chance to be in familiar surroundings and throwing to receivers he has chemistry with, I expect him to shine and elevate his stock well into the 2nd round.

David Sills V

One of the best stories in college football is about to make his story even more special. The once quarterback turned receiver became one of the nation’s premiere touchdown/red zone threats and will look to continue that in the NFL.

A third round grade is about what I expected and if selected any later than that, would be considered an absolute steal for some franchise.

Gary Jennings

Even with the attention centered around the duo of Will Grier and David Sills, Gary Jennings has quietly been just as equally productive. The fourth round seems about right, possibly even a third rounder, but I certainly don’t see him going to the third day.

Trevon Wesco

It’s not very often you see a 6’4” 285 pound tight end who can not only block, but really have the ability to be a weapon in the passing game. Wesco has that in his arsenal. Some scouts believe he could make the move to fullback, but doing so would not be utilizing his full bag of talent. Most have him going undrafted, but I find it hard to believe all 32 teams will pass on him.

Yodny Cajuste

Cajuste is arguably one of the best offensive line prospects that West Virginia has had for years. His stock has seemingly gone down the last few months from a first round pick to a late 2nd rounder. His performance at Pro Day will have a huge impact on whether or not he can sneak back up into the first round discussion.

David Long Jr.

A bit undersized, but as our very own Chris Hall told me, “He’s not going to get any bigger, so he might as well head to to the NFL now while he’s healthy.” Size is always a huge deal to scouts and GM’s, but once they get hands on his film they can throw the measurements out the window. Long could potentially end up being the best pro of this Mountaineer draft class.
