Rhett Rodriguez as WVU QB Coach is All About Fit

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – While some may view Rhett Rodriguez as just Rich’s son, he knows he fits his role at WVU better than anyone. In fact, the only person on the planet who knows the Rich Rodriguez system even close to as well as Rich himself is his son.
“I think this is a system that I knew our playbook before I knew my own high school playbook,” explained Rhett to really paint the picture of how long he’s been learning his dad’s offense.
“It has been cool to see just all the plays the places we’ve been over the years between, of course, when we were here the first time, back around to Michigan, Arizona, Ole Miss, Louisiana Monroe, Jax State, how certain aspects of the offense have stayed the same and certain aspects have changed. I’ve had a front row seat to that whole thing. So it’s been really cool to see how it’s evolved over the years.”

And what Rhett said does make sense. There’s nepotism in every industry, but every coach tries to surround himself with assistants who they trust above all else.
Of course, there are coaches with more actual coaching experience than Rhett. However, Rich has continuously emphasized that there’s no one who balances out his personality – Rhett is much calmer – while also being able to teach his system as well as his son does,
Rich Rodriguez Explains Why Rhett, Pat White Are ‘Right’ Hires for WVU
Rhett’s recent non football related job even helps him adjust to selling high school or transfer recruits on why they should become Mountaineers. Both Rich and Rhett brought up how if Rhett can convince a wealthy businessman to use particular products, he can certainly pitch the WVU football program to recruits.
Rich won’t deny the fact his son may have an advantage of being able to break into a tough industry due to his last name, but he also wouldn’t have hired him to such an important position, especially knowing the pressure he’s under, if he didn’t believe he was the right person for the job.
Rhett Rodriguez as WVU’s quarterbacks coach is a perfect example of a coach who may not be right for another program, but fits perfectly for the West Virginia Mountaineers.
