Announced Monday afternoon, WVU freshman safety Tykee Smith was named a freshman All-American by the Football Writers’ Association of America (FWAA).

Smith played in all 12 games for the Mountaineers this season, starting eight at the spear position. He was finished fifth on the team in tackles with 53, 2.5 for a loss. He intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown, and had four pass breakups. Smith was also an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.

Smith was a part of a WVU secondary that was a mix of veterans and newcomers in 2019. Seniors Keith Washington II, Josh Norwood and Hakeem Bailey led the group, but true freshmen Smith, Kerry Martin Jr., and Nicktroy Fortune played important roles.

The safety position looks bright for the Mountaineers moving forward with Smith, Martin and sophomore Sean Mahone all set to return in 2020. Mahone led the team with 80 tackles while Smith (53) and Martin (50) ranked fifth and sixth. The trio combined for three interceptions and 10 pass breakups.

Martin also received some postseason accolades, being named to the Pro Football Focus (PFF) All-Freshman third team in December.
