Morgantown, WV – The Mountaineer offense got off to a slow start with two low snaps from center Matt Jones and were forced to punt on their first possession. Kansas turned their first possession over on downs setting up the West Virginia offense with a short field. Grier found David Sills V wide open along the sideline for a 26 yard gain, then two plays later he hit Leddie Brown out of the backfield on a wheel route for a 15 yard touchdown. On the following West Virginia drive, freshman Leddie Brown made his presence known. He busted a 47 yard run up the middle, then followed that up with an 18 yard run. Spavital stuck with Brown as he eventually punched it in the end zone from one yard out.The next possession for West Virginia was sloppy and resulted in Grier throwing an interception in the end zone. Kansas took advantage of the turnover and went to the air to find success. Peyton Bender was subbed into the game at quarterback and went 3/4 on his first drive including an 18 yard touchdown pass to Mavin Saunders. Grier got the offense going once again with a 39 yard pass to Marcus Simms and utilized both tight ends in the air attack. Wesco was targeted a couple times and Grier tossed a touchdown to Jovani Haskins on a play action roll out to the left side of the field for a 14 yard touchdown.Just when it looked like West Virginia was starting to gain momentum, Grier threw back to back interceptions in the end zone making it three in the half.
To start the 2nd half, the Jayhawks drove right down the field going with a steady dosage of running back Pooka Williams. Khalil Herbert finished it off with a rushing score from 31 yards. Grier continued his poor performance by fumbling on the first drive of the half and Kansas recovered.
The Mountaineers then answered with a long, methodical drive that resulted in a touchdown when Grier found Pettaway out of the backfield for a 12 yard reception.
Kansas would put one more score on the board as the time ran out with a pass to Daylon Charlot. The Jayhawks also converted their two point conversion.
