MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia knocked off No. 25 Texas 76-73 behind great play from WVU F Pat Suemnick on Saturday night. With the win, WVU secures their first Big 12 win of the season.

West Virginia (6-10, 1-2 Big 12) snaps a three-game losing streak as the Mountaineers have dropped four of their last five coming into the Texas (12-4, 1-2 Big 12) matchup.

The Mountaineers and Longhorns played a sloppy game as the teams combined for 38 turnovers. WVU turned the ball over 16 times while Texas did so 22 times.

Suemnick got the game rolling for the Mountaineers with an athletic dunk over Texas’ Dylan Disu. On Tuesday, West Virginia had a two-point lead vs. K-State heading into halftime. Against Texas, it was the same situation with the Mountaineers heading into the break up by two.

Texas gained momentum out of the break thanks to transfer guard Max Abmas. Against WVU, Abmas finished with 32 points and 7-threes. Kerr Kriisa was able to stop Texas’ run with a three-pointer. Kriisa ended the night with 14 points on 4-of-8 three-point shooting.

Other notable scorers for WVU: RaeQuan Battle (14), Quinn Slazinski (13).

West Virginia changed its starting lineup for the second time this week as Kobe Johnson was in for Noah Farrakhan. Josiah Harris and Suemnick remained starters from the Kansas State game. Farrakhan came off the bench for WVU on Saturday.

Hours before the game, WVU added football safety Aden Tagaloa-Nelson to the roster for the remainder of the season. Tagaloa-Nelson is a 6-foot-1 freshman guard. The Kentucky native did not appear in Saturday’s game vs. Texas.

Saturday’s matchup marks the last time that Texas will play at the coliseum in the Big 12. The Longhorns are set to join the SEC in summer 2024 with Oklahoma.

West Virginia will take a few days off before traveling to Norman, Oklahoma to take on the ranked Sooners. WVU and Oklahoma will tipoff on Wednesday at 8 p.m. on ESPN+.
