West Virginia Drops Second Game of Doubleheader To Texas Tech 12-2

No. 9 Texas Tech routed West Virginia, 12-2, in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock, Texas. The Red Raiders won the first meeting 7-5. The Mountaineers are now 23-15 on the season and 6-6 in the Big 12.

Following a solid pitching outing by Texas Tech’s Andrew Morris in the first game, allowing just three hits in nine innings, Brandon Birdsell allowed just four hits in eight innings and gave up two runs, posting a ERA of 2.17.

The Red Raiders’ bats were hot in the second contest, recording 16 hits. Cole Stilwell led Texas Tech with three RBIs. Ty Coleman and Owen Washburn each had three hits, as well.

Texas Texas got in the run column first after a single by Stilwell that brought Washburn home. Ben Hampton retired the next batter to end the bottom of the second with three runners left on for Texas Tech.

In the bottom of the third, Kurt Wilson hit a two-run home run to put the Red Raiders up 3-0. It was Wilson’s second home run of the day, as he had a homer in the first game of the doubleheader. A few batters later, Washburn hit a solo home run to enhance the Red Raiders lead to 4-0.

Birdsell had a shutout through four innings and allowed just one hit. Three straight hits by Texas Tech to start the bottom of the fourth put the Red Raiders up 6-0. Stilwell and Jace Jung hit back-to-back doubles, Ty Coleman then hit a single to bring Jung home. The Red Raiders continued to pour it on in the bottom of the fourth, as Parker Kelly hit a double and Coleman scored to give Texas Tech a 7-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, Stillwell hit another double, which brought Carter home to increase the Red Raiders lead to 8-0. Through five innings, eight of the 12 hits by Texas Tech went for extra bases. After six innings, Birdsell still had a shutout and allowed just three hits. Birdsell also had seven strike outs.

West Virginia snapped Birdsell’s shutout in the top of the eighth with scoring two runs.
With the bases loaded and zero outs in the bottom of the eighth, Kelly grounded into a double play, but a runner came home to enhance Texas Tech’s lead to 9-2. Washburn followed with a single to knock in another run. The Red Raiders added two more runs and sealed a 12-2 win.

West Virginia wraps up its series with Texas Tech on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
