West Virginia Lands Transfer OL Ja’Quay Hubbard

Western Pennsylvania offensive lineman Ja’Quay Hubbard will transfer to West Virginia, he announced on Twitter on Monday.

Hubbard is a 6-foot-5, 335-pound guard from Sharpsville Area High School in Sharpsville, Pa., a town north of New Castle in Mercer County.

He spent his first collegiate season with Virginia, appearing in two games, while retaining his redshirt status. He played against Pitt and William & Mary, mostly on special teams.

Hubbard announced earlier this month that he had entered the transfer portal and decided to complete his collegiate career elsewhere.

At Sharpsville, he helped the Blue Devils to the 2018 PIAA District 10 championship game and was a finalist for Pennsylvania’s Mr. Football award. He also played basketball.

Hubbard was rated as a four-star prospect by He picked the Cavaliers over offers from Akron, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Liberty, Louisville, Mississippi State, Ohio, Pitt, Syracuse, Temple, Toledo and Western Michigan.

West Virginia head coach Neal Brown has been open about the fact that he’s been looking for a transfer at offensive line since the end of the 2019 season.

The Mountaineers will return 2019 starters James Gmiter (10 games), Briason Mays (seven gams) and Michael Brown (six games) at guard for the 2020 season.

Hubbard will need an NCAA waiver in order to be eligible in 2020. Otherwise, he would have to sit out the 2020 season and have three years of eligibility to play at WVU, beginning in 2021.
