The Black Bears have been off to somewhat of a hot start to the 2017 season as they are now sitting at 4-1 followng last nights 5-3 victory over Williamsport. The Crosscutters struck first with two runs in the first inning off a two run double from Malvin Matos. Black Bears starting pitcher Stephan Meyer lasted 4.2 innings while giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, including a solo shot from Jhailyn Ortiz in the fifth which ended Meyer’s day.
The bullpen was a huge factor for West Virginia as Nicholas Economos cleaned up things in the fifth through seventh innings and earned the win. Economos only surrendered one hit and struck out two, his “stuff” looked pretty good last night and the team can only hope to get more of that from him.
The 8th inning is when the Black Bear offense woke up and started beating up the Crosscutters bullpen. Raul Siri continued his hot hitting as he ripped a single to left scoring Garrett Brown, then shortly after Jose Barraza knocked in a pair of runs with his triple to right field.
Following a solid relief appearance from Economos, Julio Eusebio was called upon for the two inning save. Eusebio struck out two and topped off the comeback win for West Virginia completing the series sweep of Williamsport.
WP- Nicholas Economos (1-0)
LP- Orestes Melendez (0-1)
SV- Julio Eusebio (1)
