WVU Baseball One-Hits Marshall in Huntington
WVU Baseball allowed just one hit in a 3-0 win over in-state rival Marshall, blanking the Thundering Herd 3-0 in Huntington on Tuesday, March 24.
The Mountaineers (17-4, 5-1 Big 12) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, starter David Hagen and reliever Ian Korn each fanning three batters in three innings. Head coach Steve Sabins went to Reese Bassinger for the seventh and the right-hander allowed a full-count single, the only hit Marshall would manage all night.
Bassinger froze his next two batters, then induced a foul out in the right field corner to end the threat. West Virginia’s offense, meanwhile, tacked on one run in each of the first three innings. The Mountaineers singled the bases loaded in the first, allowing Matt Ineich to trot home on a Brock Wills groundout. Freshman designated hitter Zahir Barjam, making his first career start, led off the second with a full count walk. Tyrus Hall followed him with another free pass, then Gavin Kelly singled Barjam home.
Paul Schoenfeld laced a double down the line in the third, coming home on a Brodie Kresser single as West Virginia got into the bullpen. Marshall’s relievers managed to keep them in the game, Alex Caudill allowing just one walk over the final four innings, but the Mountaineers’ pitching staff was more than happy to coast with the lead. Bassinger fanned five batters in two innings and David Perez earned the save, forcing a groundball to first. Kresser fielded it cleanly and stepped on first, throwing to Ineich for the putout and the win.
WVU Baseball will travel to Arizona State this weekend, beginning their series with the Sun Devils at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27.
