WVU Baseball Remains Unbeaten With Back-and-Forth Win

WVU Baseball continued their unbeaten run to open 2025, beating Lipscomb 5-4 in a back and forth afternoon game on Saturday, Feb. 22.
The Mountaineers (4-0) managed just one extra base hit, a leadoff double from Brodie Kresser in the eighth inning that gave them the eventual winning margin, but still managed to outlast the Bison in Nashville.
Lipscomb claimed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, stinging lefty starter Griffin Kirn for a two-run homer: he saved himself from further damage with a pickoff move that erased the leadoff runner after a rundown.
West Virginia got one back the following inning after Skylar King baited a rundown of his own advancing from first base on a single, giving Kresser a chance to scurry home before the frame ended.
The Mountaineers claimed a 3-2 lead after scraping runs across in the fourth and fifth innings, once again relying on small ball and singles, then another Bison homer โ this one helping end Kirnโs day after four innings completed, three earned runs, a strikeout and 67 pitches delivered โ knotted them back up.
A sacrifice fly from Michael Perazza put West Virginia back in front in the seventh, then Kresser scored thanks to a sacrifice bunt followed by a fielderโs choice.
Reese Bassinger allowed another solo shot in the bottom of the eighth and the Bison managed to bring the go-ahead run to the plate twice, but the right-handed senior kept it together for the six out save.
Up next, WVU Baseball aims to take the series with Lipscomb during a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23.
