WVU Basketball to Hold ‘Jerry West Day’ for Iowa State Matchup
WVU basketball will honor the memory of its most legendary player by celebrating Jerry West Day during a game at the WVU Coliseum on Jan. 18 against Iowa State, the university announced Wednesday.
West, a three-time Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, passed away on June 12 of the year. WVU athletics, which inducted West into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, is honoring West throughout the 2024-25 athletic season. That includes the Jan. 18 men’s basketball matchup between the Mountaineers and Iowa State.
Fans will have the opportunity to purchase a Jerry West miniature statue prior to the game. More information will be released in the coming weeks to season ticket holders and the general public on the process for statue purchasing.
All fans in attendance will receive a Jerry West memorial pennant as part of the game’s celebrations. Members of the West family are expected to be in attendance for the game.
On game day, a special Jerry West collection of licensed merchandise will launch at the WVU Team Shop inside the WVU Coliseum. The collection will feature a selection of licensed merchandise honoring Jerry West’s career at WVU with a retro-inspired look, including throwback logos.
The men’s basketball team will wear Jerry West-era throwback uniforms against Iowa State.
A Chelyan, W.Va. native, West became a star at WVU from 1957-60. He led the Mountaineers to the program’s first Final Four appearance in 1959 and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament as West Virginia fell in the championship game.
West was also a 14-time NBA All-Star, 10-time All-NBA first team and led the Lakers to the NBA Finals 9 times, granted only winning one championship (1972). Despite falling just short in the NBA Finals, often to Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics, West owns the distinction as the only player to win NBA Finals MVP on the losing team (1969).
