One of the longest tenured Mountaineers will be exiting the WVU football program. On Thursday afternoon, Jacolby Spells announced he’s leaving West Virginia and entering the transfer portal.

“I would like to thank West Virginia for the opportunity to be a part of the program, I will be entering my name into the transfer portal,” said Spells.

This decision by Spells comes just three months after he decided to stick around during the transition from Neal Brown to Rich Rodriguez. โ€œLast ride, letโ€™s make it the best one,โ€ Spells in January.

Spells played sparingly 2024, recording only four total tackles due to dealing with an injury. Known mostly for the game sealing pick-6 in Blacksburg to beat Virginia Tech as a freshman, Spells resisted 25 tackles in his WVU career.

The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native arrived in West Virginia in 2022 after earning high praise as a recruit out of American Heritage High School. Spells was awarded four stars by both ESPN and 247 Sports.
