WVU Football Picks Up JUCO Defensive Back Jaylon Jones

WVU Football picked up junior college transfer Jaylon Jones on Sunday, June 8, a 6-foot-2, 175 pound free safety out of Fresno City College. Jones racked up four interceptions, 13 total tackles and a forced fumble in ten games for Fresno as a freshman, and he’ll have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Mountaineers.
Despite his early success, Jones flew under the radar as a recruit in high school, receiving his first Division I offer from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff during his freshman season in October 2024. Now he’ll travel across the country to the Mountain State in pursuit of his football dream. Jones announced the news of his commitment via Twitter (X), tagging Mountaineers’ safeties coach Gabe Franklin in his post.
West Virginia’s secondary ranked toward the bottom of Division I FBS in passing yards allowed per game (267.9, good for No. 120) last season. Despite that rough performance, other teams then hit the Mountaineers’ secondary hard through the transfer portal during the offseason, so Jones could earn playing time early on if he manages to replicate his junior college success. Otherwise, he could take a redshirt year or spend time on special teams as he adjusts to the highest level of collegiate football.
WVU Football will begin their 2025 season at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, hosting Robert Morris at Milan Puskar Stadium. Click here for more news regarding Mountaineers football.
