WVU Football to Play AAC Team in Frisco Bowl

WVU football will take on a team from the American Conference in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl on Dec. 17, the program announced Wednesday.
The Mountaineers will take on No. 25 Memphis from the AAC on Dec. 17. The game will be broadcast on ESPN and is played in Toyota Stadium, home of FC Dallas of MLS.
The Frisco Bowl, played in Frisco, Tx., began in 2017 and has previously featured teams from the American Conference, MAC,ย Conference USA and the Sun Belt. The bowl’s current affiliation is with the American Conference, where one of those teams, Memphis, will take on an at-large opponent, this year being West Virginia.
โWe are excited to have two outstanding teams participate in the 2024 Scooterโs Coffee Frisco Bowl, the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Memphis Tigers,โ Frisco Bowl executive director Sean Johnson said in a statement. โWe look forward to hosting this great matchup and welcoming the teams and their passionate fan bases to Frisco, Texas, for an exciting week of bowl events and a fantastic game at Toyota Stadium.โ
The Mountaineers are in a bowl game for the second year in a row, although without former head coach Neal Brown, who was fired on Sunday. Offensive coordinator Chad Scott will serve as interim head coach for the Mountaineers.
On Tuesday, WVU athletic director Wren Baker said the program preferred to play in an earlier bowl game in light of Brown’s firing. With the transfer portal opening on Dec. 9, Baker said playing in an earlier bowl would be the best way to mitigate the impact of any current WVU players who choose to transfer.
For a related story, Wren Baker is looking for integrity and leadership in the next WVU football coach.
