WVU Women's Basketball team huddle

No. 24 WVU women’s basketball will compete at the Big 12 Tournament at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo., which takes place starting this Thursday, March 7, through next Tuesday, March 12.

The Mountaineers finished the regular season 23-6 overall and 12-6 in the Big 12, the best record for the program since the 2020-21 season when they finished 22-7 overall and 13-5 in Big 12 play.

West Virginia lost three of their past four games to end the season, which includes a 74-63 overtime loss to then ranked No. 10 Kansas State on Feb. 21 on the road, a close 66-65 defeat at home to then ranked No. 24 Baylor on Feb. 24, as well as Oklahoma State away last Tuesday, 68-61. They did defeat TCU on Saturday, 57-49, to end the regular season with a victory.

The poor ending to the season for WVU women’s basketball still kept them ranked tied for No. 4 in the conference in the standings, but their losses to Baylor, who they also fell to on the road on Feb. 10, and Iowa State earlier on in the season cost them in the seeding.

West Virginia is the No. 6 seed, while Baylor is the No. 5 seed and Iowa State comes in at No. 4. They earn a First Round bye and will face the winner of First Round matchup No. 11  Cincinnati and No. 14 UCF on Thursday in the Second Round on Friday at 9:00 p.m. EST.

If WVU women’s basketball wins that matchup, they’ll face No. 3 Kansas State in the Quarterfinals on Saturday. Sunday is a day off, with the Semifinals taking place next Monday and the Final next Tuesday. Oklahoma holds the No. 1 seed with a 15-3 conference record and Texas comes in at No. 2 with a 14-4 record in Big 12 play.

The Mountaineers have won the Big 12 Tournament before in 2017, defeating Oklahoma, Texas and Baylor in the Final to take home the title. They also made the Final two other times in 2014 and 2021, but lost both times to Baylor.
