WVU WR Devin Carter Explains Decision to Flip from Penn State to West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Once Devin Carter made the decision to transfer after spending five years at North Carolina State, he wasn’t always headed to West Virginia. Before becoming a Mountaineer, Carter briefly committed to Penn State.

For the first time since joining WVU, Carter talked about why he changed his mind and will to start the season as a visiting player instead of calling Beaver Stadium home.

It sounds like all that happened was that Carter gave it a bit more thought. “I felt I would get more volume here and more production,” said Carter.

At the time, the thought was the Nittany Lions were on the hunt for a big player wide receiver, feeling that was a piece they could still use more of coming off a Rose Bowl title. WVU was, of course, replacing its entire wide receiver room from 2022.

At the end of the day, and with a little help from former Mountaineer Bryce Ford-Wheaton and maybe the influence of the West Virginia roots from his family, Carter decided Morgantown would be the best place for him to end his college career and provide the opportunity to be boost his NFL value.

Devin Carter caught 25 passes for 406 yards and two touchdowns in 2022. Despite having spent five years with the Wolfpack, Carter still has eligibility thanks to the COVID season and barely playing in 2018. By all accounts, Carter has embraced being the leader of WVU’s wide receiver room.
